ICA and ECDA Host Dialogue at the Arab Evangelical Church in Bremen

Bremen, June 2025 — In the framework of its commitment to documenting cultural and religious dynamics in the diaspora, the International Cultural Academy, represented by Dr. Media Sheikha, Director of the Office of Literature and Critical Studies in Germany and representative of the European Center for Development and Geostrategic Studies (ECDA), held a special dialogue at the Arab Evangelical Church in Bremen.

The gathering brought together Rev. Bihnam Mikhael, pastor of the Arab Evangelical Church in Germany, and Ms. Halima Khaled, a member of the congregation. The experience of Rev. Nihad Hassan, pastor of the Kurdish Church in Lebanon, was also recalled as an example of the church’s role in contemporary Kurdish and Middle Eastern issues.

The dialogue opened with reflections on faith in exile and the role of the church as an inclusive home that respects and embraces cultural and national diversity. A central point of discussion was the recent attack on St. Elias Church in Jerusalem, which participants described as a shocking violation of a sacred space with deep Christian and historical significance. Dr. Sheikha stressed that assaults on churches are not only attacks on holy sites but also direct violations of human dignity, calling on the international community to speak out against such infringements on spiritual institutions that safeguard peace.

Rev. Mikhael expressed his profound sorrow over the attack, affirming that the destruction of St. Elias Church was not directed at stone or walls, but at the spiritual heritage and collective memory of generations. He underlined that the church remains a voice for peace and that violence cannot silence this noble mission. Ms. Khaled echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the deep impact such incidents leave on believers in the diaspora, who feel their spiritual roots are being continuously targeted.

The discussion also highlighted Rev. Hassan’s ministry in Lebanon, where the Kurdish church navigates both the struggles of its people and the complexities of sectarian realities. His example underscored the church’s role as a peaceful advocate for dignity and justice, embodying the Gospel as an ethical and existential stance beyond ritual.

In her interventions, Dr. Sheikha stressed that faith is not confined to ritual practice but is a daily commitment to justice, defending the marginalized, and amplifying silenced voices. She also raised critical questions about the role of women within church institutions, advocating for a shift from mere presence to active influence, and from participation to leadership in shaping spiritual and humanitarian decision-making.

The meeting concluded with gratitude expressed by Dr. Sheikha to the Arab Evangelical Church in Bremen and to the spiritual leaders who participated. She emphasized the importance of continuing such dialogues, which build a culture that transcends narrow identities and unites faith with dignity, roots with horizons, and justice with compassion.

وفي سياق اهتمام الأكاديمية بتوثيق الحراك الثقافي والديني في المهجر، انعقد لقاء حواري مميز داخل الكنيسة العربية الإنجيلية في مدينة برمن، حيث التقت الدكتورة ميديا بالقس بهنام ميخائيل، راعي الكنيسة العربية الإنجيلية في ألمانيا، وبمشاركة الأخت حليمة خالد، عضوة الكنيسة، كما جرى استحضار تجربة القس نهاد حسن، راعي الكنيسة الكردية في لبنان، كنموذج لموقع الكنيسة في القضايا الكردية والمشرقية المعاصرة.

خلال اللقاء، فتحت الدكتورة ميديا حوارًا صريحًا حول معاني الإيمان في المنفى، وأهمية أن تبقى الكنيسة بيتًا جامعًا لا يُقصي أحدًا، ومساحة حرة تحترم التنوع الثقافي والقومي وتحتضنه.

تم النقاش في الاعتداء الأخير على كنيسة مار إلياس في القدس، الذي شكّل صدمة للضمير الإنساني، إذ تم انتهاك حرمة مكان عبادة عريق ذي رمزية مسيحية وتاريخية كبرى. وأكدت الدكتورة ميديا أن الهجوم على الكنائس، أياً كان موقعها، ليس فقط استهدافًا للمقدسات بل هو انتهاك مباشر لكرامة الإنسان، وجرس إنذار للمجتمع الدولي كي لا يظل صامتًا إزاء المساس بالمؤسسات الروحية التي تحمي السلام.

وفي هذا السياق، أعرب القس بهنام ميخائيل عن ألمه العميق إزاء ما حدث، مؤكدًا أن تفجير كنيسة مار إلياس لم يكن موجّهًا ضد حجارة أو جدران، بل ضد ذاكرة أجيال وميراث روحي يمثل أحد أقدم وأجمل ملامح الوجود المسيحي في فلسطين. وأضاف أن الكنيسة تبقى دائمًا صوتًا للسلام، وأن العنف الموجه إليها هو محاولة لإسكات هذا الصوت النبيل، ولكنها لن تنكسر.

من جهتها، عبّرت الأخت حليمة خالد عن حزنها العميق لما جرى، وأكدت أن هذه الاعتداءات تترك أثراً مضاعفاً في قلوب المؤمنين الذين يعيشون في الشتات، لأنها تُذكرهم باستمرار بأن جذورهم الروحية مستهدفة، وأن رسالتهم في أوروبا يجب أن تكون مضاعفة في الدفاع عن العدالة وعن صورة الإيمان المرتبط بالسلام والحرية.

وفي سياق متصل، تم استحضار تجربة القس نهاد حسن في لبنان، الذي يشرف على خدمة روحية في بيئة معقدة، تجمع بين المعاناة الكردية والمناخ الطائفي اللبناني. وقد أكّد أن الكنيسة الكردية ليست معزولة عن آلام شعبها، بل تناضل سلمياً من أجل كرامة المقهورين، وتؤمن برسالة الإنجيل كموقف وجودي أخلاقي قبل أن يكون دينيًا فقط.

من جانبها، شددت الدكتورة ميديا على أن الإيمان لا يُختزل في الطقوس، بل هو التزام يومي بالعدالة، وبالدفاع عن المهمشين، وبإعادة الكلمة إلى من سُلبت منهم أصواتهم. كما طرحت تساؤلات جريئة حول موقع المرأة داخل المؤسسة الكنسية، مشيرة إلى أن هناك حاجة ملحّة لتوسيع هذا الدور، بحيث تتحوّل النساء من الحضور إلى التأثير، ومن التلقي إلى المشاركة الفعلية في صنع القرار الروحي والإنساني داخل الكنيسة.

في ختام اللقاء، عبّرت الدكتورة ميديا شيخه عن امتنانها العميق للكنيسة العربية الإنجيلية في برمن، وللشخصيات الروحية التي شاركت في الحوار، مشددة على أهمية استمرار هذه اللقاءات، التي تبني ثقافة عابرة للهويات الضيقة، وتجمع بين الإيمان والكرامة، بين الجذور والآفاق، وبين الحق والرحمة
